No Parking Please

January 19th, 2010 No comments

Q. How does it work when you want to acquire a domain name that is parked by someone else? I was looking into registering a domain but it looks like it’s just kind of sitting there…

A. Registering a domain name is similar to getting a deed or more accurately a lease to some actual real estate. You determine a name for your domain and contact a registrar to pay for the rights to that domain name. The domain is yours to use for as many years as you pay for it. While you hold the rights to a domain you have the exclusive use of it.

A domain is meant to be a group of computers and or services owned by a single organization. A domain can be as small as a single computer or server that hosts a website, an email server and/or an FTP site. Often a domain is named for the company that owns it such as apple.com, sun.com or Microsoft.com but often the most successful domains are named for the service or information they provide.

Unfortunately nearly every combination of English words have already be registered and parked. The owners may be speculating that someone would be willing to pay more privately for the domain and the squatter would profit from the sale. Parked pages also can be set up to advertise other services and the squatter could enjoy recurring revenues from the ads. If you really want a particular domain name you may have to offer pay extra to get it.

Snow Leopard 10.6 Juniper Network Connect VPN

September 2nd, 2009 No comments

Here’e the fix:

Go to backup copy of OS. (you did make a backup copy before you upgraded!?!)

cd /Volumes/[backup]/usr/local/

sudo tar cvf juniper.tar juniper

sudo mv juniper.tar /usr/local/

cd /usr/local/

sudo tar xvf junpier.tar

sudo chmod 755 /usr/local/juniper/nc/[version number/
– this was not necessary for me (tar maintains permissions)

sudo mkdir /Applications/Network\ Connect.app/Contents/Frameworks
– this makes no sense since “Frameworks” is not required on 10.4 or 10.5

a Just the Fax.

July 27th, 2009 No comments

Q. After applying the latest Mac OS X update on my computer I can no longer send faxes with my Apple USB Fax/Modem.

A. Surprisingly the Mac OS X 10.5.7 software update may affect the settings and your USB modem may stop sending faxes but the fix is easy. Open “Print and Fax” in System Preferences and select your “External Modem” and press the Minus sign to remove it. Then choose “Fax PDF” from the Print menu and your Mac will recreate a new “External Modem” and you can send out faxes.

Re Unarchiving a Time Capsule archive

May 27th, 2009 No comments

This is a follow up to an archived thread about “unarchiving” a backup of the data from a Time Capsule.

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8886052

I have just started working with my second TC dual band and I have several Macs including a MacBook Air – which takes 17 hours to do the initial back up. The Time capsule is NOT a server. When you try to mount the drives on your Mac and copy files from one TC drive to the other the files are actually brought to your Mac via your network and then written back. (I have also not figured out how to connect two TCs together – you can connect them between one WAN to the other’s Ethernet port but cannot access the drives. Also server software knows you are copying to drives connected to the server so it handles the data directly between the drives.)

So I finally discovered the “Archive” function on the AirPort – which will archive an entire TC drive to a drive on the TC’s USB port. It’s reasonably fast. Next I moved and connected the USB drive the new TC but again we are back to copying to the Mac and back again. For example it said it would take 35 hours to copy 150 GB of data from the USB drive hanging off the back of the TC.

Reading the response to the thread above – which was not helpful to the poster – it dawned on me. Connect the USB drive to a spare Mac and copy the files back to the new TC – which would take half the time. Currently I am copying my 80GB backup of the Air to the new TC and it says it will take 6 hours. (The backups on the TC are sparse disk images so they are actually hundreds of little files in a package so will take much less than that but the Finder cannot really estimate the time.)

What we need is an ability to “restore” and archive with Airport Utility.

Apple?
Anyone?
Anyone?
Bueller?

Beware poor online security practices.

March 22nd, 2009 No comments

Please beware of web sites that do not securely save user passwords. As a web developer myself I am surprised at how often user login information is not securely managed and is sent by email over the Internet in plain text.

One such web site is the new Ontario Electronic Stewardship – Steward Registration web site (www.ontarioelectronicstewardship.ca). Make sure that if you register on such a web site that you do not use a password that you can afford to lose. When I registered, they sent me an email “for my records” and in plain text it contained my account number, my email address and the password that I had registered with. I immediately fired off a notice to them – suggesting they review their policies – but I am shocked that an agency that will be collect fees have LITTLE regard for PRIVACY!

If you are a web developer or if you are hiring a web developer PLEASE make sure that your registered subscribers information is securely maintained and protected.

Web sites to beware of (as of date):

Sending outside email inside Rogers

March 21st, 2009 No comments

Q. When we have guests on our network they have trouble of sending mail. We are with Rogers and the messages go out but they don’t get delivered. What could be wrong?

A. A few years ago Rogers and Yahoo joined forces so they could manage mail services together using Yahoo’s mail servers. While this benefits the services involved in managing e-mail and spam filtering, it resulted in some new rules and restrictions.

Early in the days of the Internet users were much more friendly and could be trusted on wide scale basis. Since most users on Internet could be trusted security on the systems was much looser and most mail servers could accept and relay e-mail to other users. As the Internet grew more and more nefarious types started to take advantage of this trust. Spammers soon found out this loose policy could be taken advantage of. A server that would accept mail from any e-mail address became known as an open relay.

It is estimated that 90% of all e-mail traffic is actually Spam. These days most mail servers block e-mail from domain names that are not registered among their users. So when a strange e-mail lands on the mail server it is often checked against lists of known spammers or simply refused out right. The latter is becoming the more often chosen protocol and users are now finding that their e-mail is not reaching the intended recipient. Some mail administrators maintain white lists of valid e-mail addresses but this is proved to be a huge task to manage.

If you’re trying to send e-mail via a Rogers/Yahoo you must be using a Rogers e-mail account otherwise you have to add the outgoing e-mail address to your accepted users list. Go to http://mail.yahoo.com and login with your Rogers e-mail account and password. Once you’re logged in click on the “Mail” link in the top right corner. Next click on the “Options” link. You should see a place where you can add an e-mail account. Enter your guest’s or other non-Rogers e-mail address and press the “Add” button, you can skip the next screen and at the bottom you’ll find a validation code. At the same time Rogers/Jack who will send an e-mail to that address. However you can copy the code and simply paste it into the dialog screen and press validate.

When complete you will see the outgoing e-mail address listed and you will be able to send outgoing e-mail from within the Rogers network. It is annoying extra set of steps but you can’t blame Rogers for wanting to protect its clients from the barrage of unwanted mail.

This is an important reminder about upcoming security enhancements that will require you to make some adjustments to your e-mail settings in your Rogers Yahoo! Mail (Webmail) options.

E Channel News are spammers

August 15th, 2008 No comments

It appears that the people at E-ChannelNews.com do not want you to contact them. You cannot unsubscribe from their unwanted email (the provided mechanism doesn’t work.) There is no phone number to contact them with and any attempt to email them bounces back.

It is this author’s expert opinion that they are spammers – and I am going to report them. If you are having trouble getting off their mailing list I suggest you do the same.

Unlocking Leopard and iLife08’s iPhoto Library

April 23rd, 2008 No comments

Q. Before upgrading to Leopard I was able to see my photographs in the Finder. After the upgrade I can only see the “iPhoto Library” so I cannot import images into QuarkXpress. Is there a way to import my iPhoto images into Xpress?

A. Apple has changed the way iPhoto stores images and changed the “iPhoto Library” from a folder into a “bundle”. A bundle is a special folder that appears in the Finder as an object and in fact all applications on MacOS X are bundles. Bundles were created so that an application’s resources such, as icons and other support files, could be stored in the same place. When you click on a applications icon in the Finder you are clicking on a bundle. So it would seem that you cannot access the images in the bundle…

You can see the contents of a bundle in the Finder by “right clicking” (or control clicking) the bundle which opens a contextual menu. Choose “Show Package Contents” from the menu and the bundle will open like a folder. You can then navigate through the folders to view the resources inside. You can also use this method to find your images in the iPhoto Library. The original images are located in the “Originals” folder sorted by year and date. Unfortunately you cannot use QuarkXpress’s “Import Picture” function so you will need the “Drag and Drop” Xtension.

Fortunately the folks at Quark Labs (http://labs.quark.com) have made an Xtension that will allow images to be sent to a QuarkXpress layout. Download the “Image Drag and Drop” Xtension for QuarkXpress 7 and copy it into you Xtension folder. Once there you can open iPhoto and drag an image onto the QuarkXpress layout. The Xtension is able to locate images inside the iPhoto Library bundle.

Can’t Open new Word “.docx” files

March 6th, 2008 No comments

Q. Our client has recently started sending us Word files that we cannot open. They say they have the latest version of Word. Is there another way that they can save their files?

A. Your customer has recently upgraded to either Word 2007 on Windows or Word 2008 on Macintosh. Previous versions of Word and Excel stored the data that made up the file in a binary format. This made it difficult to work with, outside of Microsoft’s suite. If you take a close look at the filename you may see that the file extension is “.docx”. This is a new format from Microsoft based on “Office Open XML” format – making the files more portable. This means that more features can be contained in a single document using specialized document objects.

If you have the new Word installed you can avoid complications when sending out files by choosing “Save As” and selecting “Word 97- 2004” format. That will ensure that the file is saved in the “older, more familiar” file format. If you need to, you can choose “Preferences” from the “Word 2008” menu on your Mac and choose “Word 97 – 2004” format from the Word tab. On a PC, click the “Office Button”, go to “Word Options” and choose “Word 98-2003” format.

Microsoft has also made file converters available for converting “.docx” files on a Mac or PC without the new Office Suite. On a PC you can install the “Office Compatibility Pack” (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924074). For Macintosh you can download the Open XML converter at (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx)
